Recording a DSLR Camera

Using a camera's live view as a video source in Screenflick.

There are two general approaches: record the camera's live view over HDMI with extra capture hardware, or use a macOS plugin that pulls video from the camera over USB.

How can I record my DSLR in Screenflick?

There are two ways: capture the camera's live view over HDMI with a capture device, or use a macOS plugin that gets video from the camera over USB. Keep reading.

Can I record a Canon or Nikon camera over USB?

Yes. Canon's EOS Webcam Utility works with Canon cameras, and PTP Webcam works with Nikon cameras. Keep reading.

Recording Over HDMI #

DSLRs typically have an HDMI port that outputs the live view at 1080p. With a "capture device" you can use that HDMI stream as a "webcam" in Screenflick. There are many such devices, but basically any device described as "plug and play" that doesn't require a plugin or driver is the easiest solution.

A few USB HDMI capture devices that should work:

Recording Over USB #

The other option is to record directly from the camera over USB. That doesn't need extra hardware, but the captured video may be smaller than the usual 1920x1080 because of the transfer speed of slower USB 2.0 class devices. Newer cameras should allow capturing higher resolutions.

Canon Cameras #

Canon provides the EOS Webcam Utility, which lets Canon cameras work in software across macOS, including Screenflick. There are limitations from both the cameras' hardware and USB, as well as in the software, but it's a welcome feature.

Nikon Cameras #

PTP Webcam is a macOS plugin that lets a Nikon DSLR be used as a camera for recording in Screenflick.
